Artist Statement:
I use the formal language of painting -
color, shape, value, line, texture,
composition - as well as an awareness of
light and space, to make paintings from
observation that describe both the solid
world of everyday reality and the intangible
world of the mind. The literal subject of the
painting is not the paintings only meaning.
Certain objects reveal opportunities the
more I look at them. Something about
their shape, structure, material, or color,
communicates to me a possibility of
having both a literal and a poetic meaning.
When I paint it feels as though I am
finding corresponding physical forms for
mental thoughts and imagery. The writer
Flannery O'Conner is known for her
opinions on writing fiction. I think this
quote can be equally applied to painting:
"The artist penetrates the concrete world
in order to find at its depths the image of
its source, the image of ultimate reality."
Through a process of observation,
intuition, and recognition I can chose
proper subjects and formal strategies to
ground my imagination and vision into
concrete form.
