Artist Statement:

My current project involves a multi-step
process enacted to research, archive,
appropriate and re-contextualize media
images that inform and influence my
perception of history and the world around
me.

The first step of my process involves
collecting and archiving various media
images. I select photos from internet news
sites and stock photography sources. I
focus primarily on images that depict
places and events in a standard way (i.e. a
traffic accident photographed from above). I
then group these images by subject and
consider them in relation to one another.
When preparing to make a painting or a
drawing I choose the images that allow me
to focus on the reality of events or places
and their stylized representation. I then
trace a sketch of the photo and project it
onto a prepared surface. The process of
tracing, projecting and copying is a labor
intensive act that formally redefines the
source and causes me to think about the
image as a sum of its parts.

Through these steps I am able to study the
source material both formally and
contextually. The process to this point,
while serving as a practical preparation for
the final painting or drawing, also functions
as a mediating filter that I use to create a
new context for the image and the project.
At this point all of the information I have
gleaned throughout the process informs
the color, patterns and intensities of mark
making in the final piece.

I have used this process to make paintings
and drawings that investigate the way the
world around me presents itself to itself. In
taking apart the images and reflecting upon
their various parts and meanings, I am
able to unpack hidden meanings and find
new directions for my work.
