Artist Statement:
I have always worked from direct
observation and find that the still life allows
me to explore the physicality of paint and
the arrangement of forms in a way that is
most meaningful for me. Still life painting
has traditionally been viewed as occupying
a “feminine” space, and has historically
been relegated to a low status because it
deals with home-bound artifacts such as
jugs, jars, bowls, pitchers, plates and the
rest. It is with this realm that I most identify
and these objects are those with which I
am most familiar and connected. It is my
intention to observe such objects, painting
them in an intimate scale removed from
their usual contexts and combined in
unexpected juxtapositions. I try to
transform the normal look of these forms
into images which signify the interior,
domestic space and resonate with the
meanings implied by their use. Although
my greatest interest is in the relationship
between these objects, they are also my
things, and therefore my diary.
